Hero of the republic of Kalmykia.

His family was exiled from Kalmykia to Novosibirsk, where Sandjiev was born in 1949.
Not until his adolescence Dmitry was able to return to his homeland in the village of Iki-Chonos.
He graduated from the Graphic Faculty of Moscow Surikov State Academic Institute of Fine Arts.

Creative development

The father of the artist, N.A. Sandjiev (1924-1994), was the first professional Kalmyk sculptor. The complex biography and hereditary talent have determined the multicultural basis of Dmitry Sandzhiev’s art: the author freely addresses the themes of cultures and religions of the world, interweaving Western and Eastern culture and archaic and modern tendencies.

Academic background allowed the artist to master graphic techniques.

The cycles of the 1980-1990s are executed in black-and-white graphics: «Wife of a shepherd», «Film is being shot», «Our smaller brethren», «August dreams». Over time, Dmitry Sandjiev developed an elaborate and impressive painting technique and unique works of plastic arts.

Art styles and techniques

The maestro combines the techniques of ancient icon painting on a levkas and authentic device, often using gold leaves and natural stones. In his work, paint appears as a precious color mass which is brilliantly utilized by the master to sculpt and jewel every inch of his creation.

It is natural for Sandjiev to reshape archaic forms into sharp modern images.

The artist prefers to work in cycles, uniting them with a common concept, color and texture peculiarity, which often takes the form of a polyptych.

The origins of his plots can be traced back to the myths of the world’s peoples and national traditions, ancient cosmology, allude to the fragile ecology of the Earth or depict space aliens and a lost on a walk dog.

The artist is still in his prime and continues to enthuse with versatility of his imaginative improvisations, philosophical depth and captivating decorativeness.
